I think that the author chose to write the passage as a dairy. Because it shows that it's coming from a person who is dealing with real life problems & situations. The diary form allows you to relate to her problems, Because it makes it more realistic. It allows you to see how her life changes day by day. It allows you to see inside her mind & her thoughts on her life.
